GUT: The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ

GUT: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ

I was at Perth airport with too much time on my hands the other day and I took a look in the book shop. It surprised me very much to see Giulia Enders’ GUT: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ on the top 5 bestsellers shelf. I was so intrigued that an owner’s manual for the gut had become a bestseller that I bought a copy. Hard to imagine this happening say 5 years ago.

Giulia’s written a beautiful book, very warm and funny. She presents complex information in the natural voice of a raconteur. I fell in love with it straight away. Giulia’s sister Jill has enhance the appeal with some endearing illustrations.

The book does contain its fair share of poo jokes, but that aside, I can’t imagine anyone ever writing a more compelling and readable work about the journey of food through our bodies and the magical gut processes that turn it in to fuel. Giulia answers all the questions you have and a lot more you didn’t consider. She details the communication between the gut and the brain, as well as explaining common digestive conditions.

Altogether I can recommend this book to anyone who has a gut.
